Abstract: |
Between May and June 2000, English Heritage carried out an archaeological survey and investigation of Barton's Point Battery near Sheerness in Kent. Barton's Point Battery was built at the eastern end of the Queenborough Lines between 1889 and 1891 as part of the fixed coast defences protecting the entrance to the River Medway, along which the naval dockyards of Sheerness and Chatham were situated (Figs 1-2). Its four heavy coast guns were operational until around 1906, shortly after which they were withdrawn and the battery placed in care-and-maintenance. (This was report number 7/2001 in a previous series). |
