Abstract: |
In May-June 2000 English Heritage undertook archaeological investigation and analytical field survey of the Iron Age hillfort of Liddington Castle in advance of repairs to the earthworks, as part of the Countryside Agency's Ridgeway Heritage Project. One unexpected discovery was the possibility that the hillfort had originally had a second, western, entrance that was blocked in antiquity. As well as the earthworks of the hillfort itself the survey covered pre-existing linear ditches, a medieval or post-medieval pillow mound and remains of more recent date. (This report was originally number 4/2001 in the Archaeological Investigation Series.) |
