Abstract: |
The Lumley Chapel consists of a former chancel of an otherwise demolished medieval church which has become the repository both of three distinguished tombs to John, Lord Lumley (c1533-1609) and his two wives, dating from c1600, and of a number of tombs removed from the earlier church when the 1860s replacement was built. Discussions are currently underway concerning the long-term guardianship of the building, which may be vested in the Churches Conservation Trust. This report consists of three distinct sections. It sets out the outline history of the building; it considers the Lumley tombs and the biographical background; and then summarily describes the other tombs within the chapel. |
