Abstract:
In April 1997 the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHME) carried out an archaeological survey and investigation of the remains of an Iron Age hillfort on Humbleton Hill in the Northumberland National Park. The inner enclosure comprises two massive stone ramparts, while the outer is less substantial, formed by a low earth and stone bank. Several circular house platforms were also recorded, mostly lying within the hillfort. In addition, various apparently more recent features, including numerous small enclosures, interpreted as possible Medieval sheilings and associated pens, and a cairn on the summit, were surveyed. (This was report number 14/1997 in a previous series)
