Abstract:
Palaeoenvironmental assessment was undertaken on behalf of Gloucestershire Orchard Trust at Longney Orchard, Longney, Gloucestershire (centered on NGR SO 75351 13737) in order to provide historic context to the orchard and to investigate the underlying sequence of alluvial sediments. Alluvial sediments have been widely studied in the Severn Estuary, providing information on large-scale landscape change and land reclamation over millennia. It was hoped that the results may contribute towards interpretation of successive phases of historic floodbank construction and land reclamation in the vicinity. A total of seven boreholes were excavated, from which broad descriptions were made of sediments in six boreholes. Samples of pollen were assessed from two boreholes close to an historic floodbank which runs through the site and six samples were submitted for radiocarbon dating. The pollen assessment showed poor preservation of pollen and hence no further analysis was recommended. Organic content in the boreholes was low and all six radiocarbon samples failed to date. Dating of the sequence of sediment was therefore difficult, but nonetheless some comparisons could be made with key sediment formations common in the Severn Estuary.
