Abstract:
Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd (PCA) was appointed by CgMs Consulting. To undertake an evaluation on land off Winchester Road, Whitchurch, Hampshire. This report details the first part of a programme of archaeological work on the site, 34 Evaluation trenches. The Site is the subject of a development proposal, which is to comprise housing and associated works. A total of 30 trenches measuring 30m X 1.8m trenches were excavated. Four trenches were not excavated due to the high voltage overhead powerlines and subsequent exclusion zone. The investigation was completed in keeping with the Written Scheme of Investigation. The Evaluation revealed archaeology in the western part of the site in the form of a Saxon SFB in Trench 10, from which pottery dating to the Saxon period, animal bone and fragmented loom weights were recovered. Trench 1 uncovered possible evidence of the post medieval chalk extraction pit, previously detailed on the Hampshire AHBR.
