Abstract: |
Border Archaeology was commissioned by Swaythling Housing Society to undertake an archaeological evaluation [Plus] programme of work at the rear of No. 66 High Street (Briton Street), Southampton, Hampshire. Its purpose was to assess the nature of archaeological remains and to indicate any mitigation requirements following the evaluation. The programme revealed little to no significant deposits, features or structures pertaining to the Medieval ditch outside the town wall. At the bases of Trenches A and B, late post-Medieval deposits were exposed. These deposits probably represent backfilling related to the Medieval ditch and post-Medieval canal. Based on the large pottery assemblage, the earliest deposit probably dates from the early to mid 19th Century. |
