Abstract: |
Chichester Council recovered a large ship's timber washed up at Bracklesham beach in the Spring of 2015; the precise location of the find, however, was not recorded. It was initially believed to be from the wreck of the Hazardous that ran aground in Bracklesham Bay in November 1706, the site of which is now a protected wreck site designated under the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973. However, further consideration of the size and form of the timber raises serious doubts as to its source. At 4.5m in length it is much longer than any recorded timbers on the wreck site of the Hazardous and, in addition, all of the frames on the Hazardous are constructed of offset pairs horizontally bolted together with iron fixings, whereas there were no horizontal bolt holes in evidence in this frame timber. Thus, it is now thought likely that this timber is from another wreck somewhere in the bay. |
