Abstract:
This illustrated report summarises the overall results of the Thetford, Norwich and A11 corridor air photo mapping project. The project was funded by the English Heritage National Heritage Protection Commissions Programme (NHPCP) and carried out by Norfolk Historic Environment Service between 2009 and 2013. The project used English Heritage National Mapping Programme (NMP) methods and standards. The report assesses the potential for using historic and modern aerial photographs for recording and characterising the historic environment of urban centres and their environs, with particular reference to strategic planning in relation to areas with 'New Growth Point' status. The report includes sections on how air photo mapping contributes to planning and heritage protection as well as an overview of sources and a summary of archaeological results. There is a chapter on designation candidates. The report describes the impact of the results on management of the historic environment, recommendations for further work in the area and suggestions for methods for future projects carried out in the context of strategic planning.
