Abstract:
In April 2019, Trent and Peak Archaeology was commissioned by Avant Homes to undertake a trial trench evaluation on land off Woodyard Lane, Wollaton, Nottingham (centred on SK 53045 40550) (Figure 1). The programme of archaeological work was in advance of a proposed residential development and community facilities with some potential for accessible open space. Three of the fourteen trenches were placed in order to target areas of archaeological interest. Trench 1 targeted the 19th century building in the south-east corner of site. Trench 8 and Trench 12 targeted parch marks observed on satellite imagery and believed to be possible medieval fish ponds associated with Willoughby Estate. Nine of fourteen trenches revealed archaeological remains. These remains included a 19th century structure seen on historic maps, industrial kilns or furnaces, post-medieval made ground possibly related to creation of the canal, and a semi-circular feature also possibly associated with canal construction. The remaining five trenches contained no deposits or features of archaeological significance. All archaeological remains have been determined to be early modern or modern in date.
