Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by RPS Planning and Development on behalf of Beechcroft Land Limited to undertake an archaeological trial trench evaluation on a 2.94 hectare piece of land south of The Forty residential development, Cricklade, Wiltshire, National Grid Reference (NGR) 409660 193100, prior to the determination of a planning application. The proposals are for a development comprising residential properties and associated infrastructure and landscaping. Previous investigations on the Site compries a Heritage Assessment prepared by RPS (2013) and subsequent geophysical survey by Stratascan (2014). The evaluation, which took place between the 30th of July and the 5th of August 2014, comprised 14 machine-stripped trial trenches approximately 30m by 1.8m, i.e. c. 2.5% of the proposed development site. Trenches were located so as to target geophysical anomalies as well as to provide even coverage across the Site. The evaluation established some potential for Romano-British agricultural and possibly settlement activity within the Site, and the remnants of medieval to post-medieval settlement (including structural elements) towards the northern part of the Site.
