Abstract: |
Between the 27th November 2017 and the 22nd May 2018 York Archaeological Trust conducted the excavation of one test pit and a watching brief during flood repair works at The Blue Bicycle, Fossgate, York. The excavated test pit indicated survival of early 19th century archaeology, indicated by the presence of a cobble yard and steps into a former building, all below the proposed formation level. This level of survival was also seen during ground reduction works in the lower yard. The rear basement revealed early to late 19th century archaeology in the form of levelling deposits for an in-situ brick floor associated with the use of the building at that time. In the main basement and basement partition, ground reduction works revealed a thick deposit of modern made ground for the current concrete floor level. Nothing of archaeological significance was discovered during the course of the works. |
