Abstract:
Border Archaeology Ltd (BA) was instructed by Kate Darby of KDA on behalf of the Quakers of Ludlow to carry out a programme of Archaeological Observation (AO) in connection with the erection of a replacement Meeting House following partial demolition of existing and conversion of a redundant building into an annexe for the new Quaker Meeting House (NGR: SO 51118 75320) (Planning ref. 17/05924/FUL). The methodology proposed archaeological observation of the interior and exterior of the site during the final stages of demolition and any associated groundworks. In the event, a cobbled surface was revealed within Room 001 of the 20th century building. No evidence for late medieval or post medieval activity such as burgage plots, buildings or general domestic activity was evident perhaps due to the late 20th century alterations which included extensive internal and external groundworks and landscaping. The site is considered a post medieval site with extensive modern alterations that may have removed the potential to identify medieval occupation.
