Abstract:
From November 2016 to April 2017, Compass Archaeology were commissioned to undertake an archaeological watching brief and evaluation on Phase 2 of the Mitre Square Redevelopment, Duke's Place, City of London, EC3A. The groundworks involved the excavation of a drop shaft (4.8m x 2.1m x 3.2-3.4m deep) and several trenches for the installation of a new drainage system. Trench 1 was orientated NE-SW and measured c.20m x 1-1.8m x 1.2-1.9m deep. Trench 2 measured 11m x 1.5m x 1m deep, and was aligned NW-SE. The stratigraphy varied between the drop shaft and both trenches, though generally comprised of modern paving or carriageway surface overlying a thick layer of post-medieval made ground. Several post-medieval brick walls cut this made ground, and were interpreted as basement walls for the buildings that surrounded Mitre Square. A great deal of human remains, along with post-medieval CBM, CTP, pot and glass were recovered from trench 1, interpreted as a mixed backfill from the burial ground of St James' Church (1727-1874), situated under the nearby Sir John Cass Primary School. Three large fragments of worked stone were found in the drop shaft, they were related to the Priory of Holy Trinity, a medieval complex that spanned the area. These stones were residual, and the only finds that were earlier than post-medieval. No other finds or features of significant archaeological interest were found, probably due either to post-medieval truncation or the shallow limit of excavation; the lowest level recorded was 12.02mOD.
