Abstract:
A series of small excavations (P1 - P5), measuring c 1.90m x 1.10m, were recorded for investigative purposes prior to redevelopment of the rear of the building. The recorded sequence was quite straightforward and largely uniform throughout each excavation; the findings were comparable to those of the evaluation trench, excavated in 2015 in the centre of the basement area (Compass Archaeology, 2015). The earliest layer is characterised by a natural alluvial deposit, which had been reworked/disturbed by c 17th century activity at its uppermost level. This was then overlaid by 1.60m of later made ground, divided into two principle phases of rubble deposition, the bulk of which is likely to be of 19th century date (or even early 20th century at the upper levels). The stratigraphy at the site is impacted by several intrusive 19th/20th century structures - such as a red brick drain, a possible red brick cistern/soakaway and a yellow stock brick wall base. These, along with the multiple horizons of made ground, highlight the increased development that occurred at the site during the 19th/20th centuries.
