Abstract: |
Between the 12th October 2018 and 11th January 2019 Compass Archaeology conducted a watching brief on groundworks associated with a public realm scheme at 60-70 St Mary Axe, City of London EC3A. The work was commissioned due to the scheme being located over the two Scheduled Monuments of the Roman City wall and bastions on Camomile Street and Goring Street (LO26L and LO26M). The work monitored primarily superficial streetscape excavations and the completion of a single drop shaft, located on St Mary Axe. The stratigraphy observed in this drop shaft comprised the existing road surface above modern, disturbed made ground. No finds or features of archaeological interest were recorded during the watching brief. Natural geology was not encountered. |
