Abstract: |
Cowl House, East Quantoxhead was the focus of a detailed archaeological investigation and a brief architectural assessment carried out by staff from English Heritage. The house comprises a series of stone-built ranges enclosing a small central courtyard with the east-facing front, dating from c 1628-29, constituting the final major phase of alterations. Archaeological evidence suggests the house formed the focus of an elite medieval landscape, occupying a prominent position within a manorial enclosure or 'curia'. Surrounding the house were a series of paddocks, orchards and courts, with the parish church of St. Mary's also located within the manorial enclosure. The wider landscape comprised a deer park, warren and ponds with access to the short stretch of foreshore controlled by the manor. The earthwork remains of early post medieval gardens were recorded to the south of the house, with what is thought to be the vestiges of a dovecote or banqueting house to the east. |
