Abstract: |
Archaeological field evaluation, via trial trenching was carried out on Land East Of Swindon, Great Stall, as part of the wider proposal known as the Eastern Villages Scheme. A probable Prehistoric occupation site, of at least two phases, was identified to the east of the investigation area, dating to the Bronze Age and Later Iron Age/Romano-British periods. Scattered features of Prehistoric and Romano-British date were also identified across the site, likely to relate to agricultural use of the land. An assemblage of Neolithic to early Bronze Age lithics were recovered from deposits across the investigation area together with a Neolithic polished stone axe. However, no features of these periods could be positively attested. Post-medieval brick making was identified in the form of residues of clamp kilns which were likely associated with the construction of the former Wiltshire and Berkshire Canal. Deposits associated with the infilling of the canal were also identified. |
