Abstract:
Addyman Archaeology undertook an archaeological watching brief and excavation on the site of a former WWII military training and prisoner of war camp within the Dumfries House estate in advance of the redevelopment of the site for a new Farm Education Centre. The camp is known as Auchinleck, Temple, Camp 22 or Base Camp and is visible on vertical air photographs flown by the RAF from 1945. It was used as a military training camp in the early years of the war, later becoming a POW base camp for Italian, then German, prisoners. After the war it served as a repatriation camp for Polish soldiers, and was later used by local families as social housing. The camp was demolished by the late 1950s. A large part of the central section of the camp was revealed during the present works. Some 66 buildings were recorded during the present project, attested mainly by the concrete and locally-made brick foundations of prefabricated frame huts and the concrete footings of Nissen huts. Where concrete floors survived, internal features such as partitions and stove or boiler footings could be identified, as well as ablution and sanitary blocks. The layout of the buildings in north-south columns was identified, as well as the linking network of concrete paths, roads, courtyard areas, and fence-lines. A large assemblage of finds was retrieved in association with these buildings, and included a metal Wehrmacht cap badge, the mould of a Luftwaffe ground assault badge, NAAFI and other ceramics and crockery, whole glass vessels and metal polish containers, as well as children's toys and other artefacts associated with the camp's use as social housing in its latest phase. Features predating the imposition of the camp were also identified including an early Dumfries House estate track, ditches and an area of rig and furrow.
