Abstract:
Archaeological investigations, consisting of the machine-excavation of ninety-three trenches, on land at Elm Grove, Drynham Lane, Trowbridge, Wiltshire, was undertaken by AC archaeology Ltd. during May 2019. The investigation was undertaken in support of a future planning application for the development of the site. The application area has been subject to a previous desk-based assessment and magnetometer survey. Of the trenches excavated across the site, ten revealed evidence for archaeological deposits. This evidence included a number of features possibly representing pit-kilns for the production of charcoal. One of these which contained the large proportion of a single cooking vessel dated between the 11th to 12th century AD. Two trenches revealed structural deposits including part of an agricultural building, along with probable related features associated with a former homestead which once stood on the site. This building is depicted on the 1837 tithe map, but no longer present after the late 19th century. A quantity of post-medieval artefacts was recovered including late-17th to 19th century pottery, clay tobacco pipes and glass vessels likely to be associated with the former homestead.
