Abstract:
Addyman Archaeology undertook a Watching Brief at Scotch Whisky Experience, Castlehill, adjacent to Edinburgh Castle esplanade during ground breaking works as part of a scheme to expand and enhance the building. The building is a former school and adjacent janitor's house and is a Category B Listed Building. The monitoring included a series of trial pits as well as internal works and works to the western and southern courtyards. The trial pits did not reveal any evidence for earlier deposits. The internal ground reduction revealed two walls, which pre-dated the school building. Further monitoring in the western and southern courtyards revealed the foundation courses of the standing building and modern backfill related to services; no earlier deposits were encountered.
