Abstract:
AOC Archaeology Group was commissioned by Cala Homes (East) Ltd to undertake a monitored topsoil strip and excavation on the site of the former Kinleith Paper Mill in Currie, Edinburgh. A number of walls, foundations and surfaces relating to the Kinleith Paper Mill from the mid-19th century onwards were encountered. In addition to these, evidence of the earliest phase of construction from the late 18th century was also revealed, including sandstone walls, machine bases and a large sandstone arch covering the substantially intact mill lade. The mill lade itself still contained girders and pipes and the areas encountered were largely intact, including a brick access chamber, also containing pipes and girders. The secondary phase uncovered the remains of the drainage system to the lade, as well as the flue system in addition to a mix of red brick and concrete structures likely associated with the foundations of the mill building. Overall ground conditions were poor with preservation of the structures fairly meagre.
