Abstract: |
In April 2014 Archaeology South-East (a division of the Centre for Applied Archaeology, UCL) carried out a programme of historic building recording at Land at Tunbridge Lane, Bottisham, Cambridgeshire (Centred at NGR TL 5452 6088). The work was commissioned by CgMs Consulting Limited to help inform the planning process for redevelopment of the site, which comprises the demolition of the existing buildings and their replacement with low rise residential properties. A Cultural Heritage Statement (Hawkins 2014) has previously been produced by for the site. The site formed part of the RAF Bottisham training airfield during the Second World War, and a number of original buildings relating to this use survive on the site, alongside a small number of later buildings. The buildings were recorded at English Heritage Level 1 or 2, as appropriate. The site is now occupied by Crystal Structures Ltd, the buildings variously in use as workshops and stores. Despite some later modifications, the historic layout of the site can be appreciated and it forms a surviving fragment of a much larger RAF complex, illuminated by documentary sources. |
