Abstract: |
Archaeology South-East (ASE), the contracting division of the Centre for Applied Archaeology (CAA), Institute of Archaeology (IoA), University College London (UCL) was commissioned by CgMs Consulting Ltd to undertake a second phase of archaeological evaluation at land off Marringdean Road, Billingshurst, West Sussex. A simple sequence of natural Weald Clay overlain by topsoil was recorded across the majority of the evaluated area; in addition subsoil was noted in trenches in the south-eastern and north-eastern corners of the site. The evaluation trenches, many of which were located to target positive linear anomalies identified in a previous geophysical survey, demonstrated that these did not correspond with archaeological features. A large area of magnetic disturbance in the north-eastern part of the site proved to be the result of a widespread dump of modern material |
