Abstract:
Between 5th March and 3rd July 2014 Archaeology South-East (ASE) was commissioned by John D. Clarke Architects on behalf of their client, the Parochial Church Council, to undertake an archaeological watching brief at the Church of the Transfigurations, Church Hill, Pyecombe, West Sussex (NGR TQ 292) during groundwork for an extension to the south of the church and associated services. The 2014 watching brief was successful in revealing the full extent of the former southern porch following its first discovery within the test pits excavated during the 2012 investigations. A total of five articulated burials were recorded and excavated to avoid risk of disturbance by the groundwork. Ceramic artefactual dating suggested that the part of the cemetery near to the extension was probably in use throughout the medieval period (c.1200-1500), perhaps even from the time of the original construction of the church. Natural weathered chalk geology [4] was encountered at a maximum height of 111.05m AOD within the area of the new extension and there was evidence to suggest that the natural horizon had been truncated by grave-digging activity.
