Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in May 2019 at The Marsh, Wanborough. Seven trenches were excavated. No significant archaeology was identified during the evaluation. The two medieval ditches seen previously during an evaluation to the west of the site did not continue into the current site. A substantial boundary ditch, which forms the western boundary of the site maybe associated with the outer boundary of the moated manor and explain why the medieval ditches do not continue. Two heavily truncated floor surfaces, sealing the subsoil, were encountered in one trench. These were within areas known to contain late post-medieval/early modern domestic buildings indicated on historic mapping. In several locations within the site, the ground has been heavily contaminated by modern construction backfill, which appears to correspond with magnetic responses identified in the geophysical survey results. |
