Abstract: |
In September 1998 the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHME) carried out an archaeological survey and investigation of the former South Front Barracks part of the defences on the Western Heights at Dover in Kent. Work on the South Front as a whole began in 1860 and continued until mid-decade. More buildings were added gradually thereafter, to meet new or changing requirements. Some buildings were probably in use during the Second World War but by 1953 the site appears to have been derelict. (This was report number 30/2001 in a previous series) |
