Abstract:
This Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey report covers a desk based assessment component of the wider assessment of the heritage of the South Devon Coast. This builds on previous work carried out as part of the National Mapping Programme. The survey created 2471 new records and enhanced a further 1059 records in the local Historic Environment Record (HER) The records will be available through the Devon Torbay HERs and online through Heritage Gateway The information generated by the project has been used, together with existing HER data, to summarise all known archaeology within the intertidal zone and its immediate hinterland The HER data has also been used to assess the vulnerability of historic and archaeological sites along the South Devon coast based on models of future coastal change within the relevant part of the Durlston Head to Rame Head Shoreline Management Plan The survey provides an overview of coastal change along the South Devon Coast from the Late Upper Palaeolithic onwards provided, in order for all coastal assets to be placed within their wider historic landscape context Research themes and priorities identified by the desk-based assessment have been recognised and discussed with reference to the South West Archaeological Research Framework (SWARF) and the Maritime Research Agenda for England The report identifies specific sites and areas that would benefit from further work. This will help to inform a programme of future (Phase2) fieldwork AC Archaeology were commissioned by Historic England to carry out the work.
