Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on land to the north of the Glebelands estate in Pulborough, West Sussex, in advance of the construction of 13 houses and related groundworks. The evaluation revealed a buried Iron Age field system with some associated pits and postholes, perhaps indicating nearby domestic activity. Also found was a ditch, seemingly unassociated with the Iron Age activity, but of unknown date, and some unstratified worked flint. After consultation with West Sussex County Council's Senior Archaeologist, a mitigation strategy was proposed which comprised an archaeological watching brief during the installation of the new access road, and excavation of the housing platforms. Further archaeological work may be required during other phases of development, but the nature and necessity of these strategies would depend upon the results of the initial works. |
