Abstract:
Archaeology South-East (ASE), the contracting division of the Centre for Applied Archaeology, University College London, have been commissioned by CgMs Consulting Limited on behalf of their client to undertake an archaeological evaluation at Land East of Billingshurst, West Sussex. A total of 27 trenches were excavated in this phase (2) of the evaluation. Ten of the trenches were found to contain archaeology. This included three post holes, one burnt pit and several linear features. The burnt pit contained pottery possibly dating from the Bronze Age. One of the linear features contained a large amount of Romano British Pottery of the 1st and 2nd Centuries, associated with a possible Roman farmstead. The majority of the features excavated did not contain any dating material, though two flint blades were recovered as well as medieval pottery recovered from the subsoil. Over the majority of the site, the topsoil came directly down on to the natural geology, and was between 0.25 and 0.35m thick. The natural geology consisted of orange clay, with sandstone and manganese patches.
