Abstract: |
Archaeology South-East was commissioned by CgMs Consulting to carry out an archaeological evaluation on land at Woodlands Close, Crawley Down, West Sussex, in advance of the development of the site and the construction of residential housing with associated infrastructure. Eight evaluation trenches measuring 25m x 1.8m were excavated. Natural geological deposits comprising of moderately firm sand clay with manganese and sandstone inclusions were encountered at a height of between 120.27m AOD in the north-west corner of the site and 123.98m AOD in the south-east corner. Seven of the eight excavated trenches were devoid of archaeological features. One probable field boundary ditch, on an opposing alignment to the current field system was recorded within the site area directly overlain by a deposit of topsoil. The feature remained undated but historical map evidence would suggest the feature must pre-date AD 1870. No further finds or features were identified. |
