Abstract: |
This report presents the results of an archaeological evaluation carried out by Archaeology South-East at Land to the South of Canterbury, Kent between 14th and 17th December 2015 and the 4th and 8th January 2016. The fieldwork was commissioned by CgMs prior to determination to aid archaeological mitigation for the site. The evaluation uncovered evidence of ditches and pits all dating to the Late Iron Age - Early Roman period. The occurrence of tile and brick within the ditches in Site A may suggest the presence of a building on site. Further linear features within the wider site are also related to this phase of activity. The pottery suggests a fairly short-lived period of activity dating from in the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. To the south of this, in Site B, evidence was uncovered of a possible defensive structure on the high ground dating from the Middle Iron Age (early 1st century BC), which was added to at around the time of the conquest. The evaluation has confirmed the presence of interesting 1st century BC to 1st century AD activity. The ditches and pits indicate settlement activity in this area of the site, while the brick and tile hint at the possibility of a building. A small amount of activity may have occurred in the late Roman period, perhaps associated with the building demolition and re-use of material. In addition a small residual assemblage of prehistoric worked flint was recovered. The location of the site close to the Roman route ways Watling Street on the hinterland of Canterbury is of considerable interest. These roads are considered to be of local significance, perhaps developing in response to increasing economic and agricultural intensification of the area, and the close proximity of the site to Canterbury may inform on the early Roman development of the town |
