Abstract: |
This report presents the results of an archaeological evaluation carried out by Archaeology South-East at Penlands Farm, Haywards Heath, between 20th June and the 21st July 2016. The fieldwork was commissioned by CgMs Ltd in advance of development of the site. The earliest identifiable activity on the site was a prehistoric enclosure. No dating evidence was retrieved from this feature, but it was stratigraphically earlier than a large Late Iron Age double-ditched enclosure and associated pits dating to between 50BC - 100AD. Features associated with medieval agricultural activity were encountered in the central part of the site, dating to AD1075 - AD1250. A post-medieval trackway, field boundary and field system dated to the 18th century. |
