Abstract:
An archaeological excavation was undertaken by Archaeology South-East (ASE) in advance of flood alleviation developments at Tilgate Forest Park, Crawley, West Sussex (NGR TQ 28009 34394). An archaeological watching brief was also carried out during the subsequent flood alleviation works. The archaeological investigations took place between March and June 2010 and were commissioned by Jacobs UK Ltd on behalf of their client, The Environment Agency. The archaeological investigations at Tilgate Forest Park revealed three phases of archaeological activity from the mid 15th century onwards. The mid 15th to 17th century activity (Phase 1) was largely represented by ditches and pits. A small square sandstone structure was also encountered. Low quantities of ironworking slag were recovered from several of the features from this period. The foundation trenches of an 18th to 19th (Phase 2) century building, thought to be the manor of Lower Tilgate, were also revealed during the excavation. These foundation trenches, which were filled with demolition debris, closely match the footprint of the manor which appears on the 1839-40 Tithe and the 1st edition (1874) Ordnance Survey maps. The foundations of an 18th-19th century estate cottage/farmhouse were revealed northeast of Tilgate Lake. Partially surviving sandstone and later brick wall footings are indicative of two construction phases for the development of the building from a humble cottage into a large 'farmhouse' structure. Phase 3 activity at Tilgate Park (20th century) represents a time at which the estate cottage/farmhouse went out of use as the ground was turned over to the park and became forested. No archaeological remains were encountered during the archaeological watching brief which was maintained during the construction phase.
