Abstract: |
This report presents the results of an archaeological watching brief carried out by Archaeology South-East at Cissbury Ring hillfort in Worthing, West Sussex on 2nd September 2015, on behalf of the National Trust. Cissbury Ring is a scheduled monument: the site of a Neolithic flint mine, an Iron Age hillfort with evidence of subsequent Roman refortification and agricultural activity, an Anglo Saxon mint, medieval agricultural activity, and Second World War defensive structures. The watching brief carried out here was a small piece of work, however, involving the removal of existing wooden fence posts around the site and their replacement with new steel posts, for which larger post holes were excavated. The new post holes were only 0.3m by 0.3m in size and no archaeological finds or features were noted during the course of the works. |
