Abstract: |
The historic building survey and background research into the former Grays Magistrates Court has revealed that this substantial municipal building, which occupies a prime location at the head of the High Street, was constructed by 1929 in a classical Italian Revivalist style to replace a late Victorian Gothic-styled predecessor. The present magistrates court was built to the designs of architect Christopher. M. Shiner, a locally renowned architect also responsible for the design of Gray's Free Library in 1902 and in 1907 for a number of new dwellings within the prestigious Hampstead Garden Suburb. The Police and Magistrates Court was laid out adopting a hybrid pavilion plan, that presented it principal elevations south onto the Orsett Road and the High Street. The construction of a new Police station in 1977, resulted in the buildings sole use as a magistrates court and accordingly its internal re-modelling |
