Abstract:
Archaeology South-East (ASE), the contracting division of the Centre for Applied Archaeology (CAA), Institute of Archaeology (IoA), University College London (UCL) was commissioned by Landscape Planning Group Ltd., to undertake a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording during groundworks associated with the construction of a single storey extension at Rowden's Farm, Grimstead Road, West Grimstead. The current Rowden's farmhouse originates from c. 1700 with an 18th century extension and is a Grade II listed building. It is situated as part of an enclosed farmyard, with associated farm buildings dating to the 18th century and including a Grade II listed barn. The foundation trenches revealed a truncated ground surface, with made ground deposits overlying natural strata. A possible clay lined well lay adjacent to the house and cut into natural strat, with a small brick lined feature, possibly the remains of a trough also within the confines of the trench. These were likely contemporary with the farm buildings and were later backfilled, possibly to make room for a barn/wood store that was in place from 1810-1973.
