Abstract: |
Campbell Buchanan are gathering baseline information in support of a planning application to Central Bedfordshire Council for the construction of a residential development at Land east of Hitchin Road, Fairfield, Bedfordshire. A programme of archaeological field evaluation has been carried out in support of that application, comprising two stages of work: Stage 1 geophysical survey, followed by Stage 2 trial trenching. Archaeological features were identified in 21 of the 24 trenches, with only Trenches 13 to 15 being devoid of archaeological remains. These features have provided evidence of activity on the site dating from the late Bronze Age/early Iron Age to post-medieval periods, though the principal features comprise a series of bedding trenches and cultivation furrows likely to date to the Roman and medieval periods respectively, as well as a number of large pits and other features appearing to be associated with a focus for middle Saxon settlement. |
