Abstract:
CgMs Heritage are gathering baseline data in support of a future planning application for commercial development on land centred on SP 83677 33424 at Snelshall East, south-east of Lizard Drive, Tattenhoe, Milton Keynes. The development area comprises two adjacent fields. Albion Archaeology was commissioned to carry out an archaeological trial trench evaluation in support of the planning application. The trial trenching results demonstrated that the two fields within the proposed development area were very different in character. The majority of the north-western field has been subjected to substantial modern landscaping, including the dumping of mixed deposits containing modern building debris that had effectively levelled a once undulating field. In contrast, the south-eastern field appeared to be relatively undisturbed. However, it contained only one archaeological feature, a furrow within Trench 4 indicative of medieval arable cultivation. The absence of other furrows is suggestive of significant truncation by modern ploughing. The north-western field contained a single feature of human origin - a small ditch within Trench 16 on the western periphery of the field. Its fill contained two small sherds of highly-abraded early Romano-British pottery. However, the location and orientation of the ditch suggests that it was probably associated with a post-medieval field boundary visible on the 1926 OS map. The results of the archaeological trial trenching indicate that the proposed development area does not contain any archaeological features or deposits with the potential to contribute to any local, regional or national research agendas. The project archive will be deposited with Buckinghamshire County Museum (accession no AYBCM: 2018.102).
