Abstract: |
In November 2015 Archaeological Research Services Ltd was commissioned by Radmore Estates Ltd to undertake an archaeological watching brief at Aspley House, 2 High street, Colton, Rugeley. A planning application has been consented by Staffordshire County Council for the erection of two dwellings on the rear garden of Aspley House. The watching brief was carried out to ensure that any potential archaeological remains on site encountred during the course of the groundworks were recorded and interprtated prior to removal, impartically archaeological features associated with early medieval rural settlements. Three sub-oval pits and a sub-circular pit were encountered during the grounds works. Finds of pottery sherds, clay pipe, glass, and metal recovered from the these pits indicate a post-medieval to modern date for these features, although little more can be said about their potential significance other than that they are consistent with settlement activity on the site from the post-medieval period onwards. |
