Abstract: |
Herefordshire Archaeology undertook a woodland survey which formed part of the Herefordshire Woodlands Archaeological Survey undertaken in partnership with the Forestry Commission. A rapid site identification survey was carried out in the Aconbury Hill woods and Wallbrook Wood, part of the Duchy of Cornwall Guy's Estate, using a hand held Global Positioning System to record the location of archaeological features encountered. Earthwork features were observed within the woods that illustrate a long history of human activities, including agricultural production, woodland management and mineral extraction, dating from the medieval and post-medieval periods. Recorded archaeological features include lynchets, charcoal burning platforms, quarries, and holloways that indicate changing patterns of land use and resource management. |
