Abstract: |
A geo-archaeological evaluation was carried out in advance of redevelopment. The site had been heavily truncated by construction of the present building. Pleistocene floodplain sands and gravels were recorded beneath the basement slab, while traces of sandy clay subsoil were observed in the southern part of the site. This deposit may represent an early Holocene land surface, but could also be counted as a lens within the Pleistocene sands. It is possible that the site lay on or at the margin of an island of higher ground from the Mesolithic period onwards. No other archaeological remains were present. |
