Abstract:
ARCUS were commissioned by Watkin Jones Construction to undertake an archaeological evaluation on a site north of Broad Street, Sheffield, SK 3618 8758. The site was situated immediately to the south of the elevated track of the Sheffield Supertram, to the east of the Park Square roundabout. The evaluation indicated that, although pockets of archaeological deposits survived, large areas of the site had undergone heavy 20th-century truncation. However, Trench 6 yielded limited evidence for an extinct water course (palaeo-channel). Such features are very rare in urban Sheffield. The potential importance of this feature prompted the South Yorkshire Archaeology Service (SYAS) to request an archaeological watching brief on the remainder of ground-reduction operations. The structures and features uncovered prompted a final stage of excavation. Three areas of interest were defined and agreed by the SYAS. Structure in Area 1 were mostly associated with the Park Steel Works, 1833-1898. This area was subject to minimal recording: it was planned by digital survey, photographed and context descriptions completed. Full excavation recording was carried out on Areas 2 and 3. Area 2 yielded early 19th-century buildings and a significant number of earlier features, some of which were horicultural bedding trenches. Area 3 was located to the west of Blast Lane to identify and quantify the possible palaeo-channel seen during the evaluation. Archaeological deposits in this trench were truncated by 19th- and 20th-century intrusions. This removed any earlier archaeology.
