Abstract:
Two geoarchaeological boreholes were put down at the site. When compared with other nearby records, the results revealed a gravel surface that sloped downwards from south-west to north-east, overlain by Holocene alluvial and peat deposits. The peat deposits accumulated between the middle Neolithic and middle Bronze Age, contemporaneously with that recorded at the nearby St Luke's Square site. Assessment of the micro and macrofossil remains indicated a wetland environment dominated by alder carr, and a dryland occupied by mixed-deciduous woodland of oak, hazel and lime. Potential indicators of human activity and saline conditions were also recorded towards the top and base of the peat.
