Geoarchaeological monitoring of cable percussion boreholes and a programme of deposit modelling was carried out in order to produce a model of the sub-surface stratigraphy of the site. The results of the deposit modelling revealed a sequence of Shepperton Gravel overlain by Alluvium, containing Peat (between 0.5 and 2.0m thick), overlain by Made Ground. The Gravel surface is relatively even and lies at between ca. -3.5 and -4.0m OD across the site, before falling towards a possible Early Holocene palaeochannel recorded towards the southeast of the site. Additional geoarchaeological boreholes collected from the site for assessment revealed the presence of a Lower Peat horizon; assessment of the pollen in this horizon indicates that it post-dates the Mesolithic/Neolithic elm decline (ca. 6000-5500 cal BP). Radiocarbon dating of the upper Peat horizon has demonstrated that accumulation began during the Middle Neolithic (5290-4980 cal BP). On the basis of the thickness of the Peat, cessation may have occurred sometime during the Middle or Late Bronze Age. The combined results of the palaeobotanical assessments indicate that during the formation of the lower Peat, a wet, alder-dominated fen environment dominated on the peatland surface, with deciduous woodland on the dryland. During the formation of the upper Peat and organic sediments, the assessments are initially indicative of a relatively wet peat surface dominated by alder. Higher in the sequence there are indications of a drier, more mature woodland growing on the Peat surface, potentially including both elm and yew. There is no definitive evidence in the lower Peat or the upper Peat/organic sediments for human activity. However, the vegetation history of the site records several important events, each of which has some association with anthropogenic disturbance.
