Abstract:
Herefordshire Archaeology undertook a woodlands survey which formed part of the Herefordshire Woodlands Archaeological Survey undertaken in partnership with the Forestry Commission. A rapid site identification survey was carried out in Hampton's Rough Wood and Rough Hill Wood, part of the Duchy of Cornwall Guy's Estate, using a hand held Global Positioning System to record the location of archaeological features encountered. Earthwork features were observed within the woods that illustrate a long history of human activity, including agricultural production, woodland management and mineral extraction, dating from the medieval and post-medieval periods. Recorded archaeological features include lynchets, banks and ditches, charcoal burning platforms, quarries, and holloways that indicate changing patterns of land use and resource management.
