Abstract:
In September 2012, Oxford Archaeology North (OA North) was commissioned by Fielden Clegg Bradley Studios, acting on behalf of English Heritage, to carry out a programme of archaeological investigation in advance of proposed regeneration and development works at the Ditherington Flax Mill site near Shrewsbury. The project was supported by a grant obtained from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and the scope of the archaeological works required the delivery of a public-led excavation on the site. The public-led excavation investigated the site of a group of former outbuildings (centred on NGR 349895 313920), including a stable and a wash house linked to a gas holder, which occupied the northern part of the flax mill site. These structures were targeted during an archaeological evaluation that was carried out in 2010, which revealed well-preserved structural remains at a depth of c 300mm below the modern ground surface. The public-led excavation targeted the entire footprint of these outbuildings, and was carried out in April and May 2013.
