Abstract: |
In June 2016 Oxford Archaeology East undertook a small excavation of 160sq.m at Land off Bannold Road, Waterbeach Cambridgeshire (TL5020 6600). This was for the purposes of investigating the surroundings of Roman pits identified in evaluation trenches in October 2015. The pits had been thought to represent 1st-2nd century small scale clay extraction for pottery production. The excavation revealed further pits restricted to an area of natural clay geology with no evidence of associated settlement. Limited finds included small quantities of animal bone and abraded pottery sherds. The pits probably do represent clay extraction, part of the Horningsea industry, potentially for use in kilns recently excavated at 12 Pieces Lane or elsewhere nearby. |
