Abstract: |
The majority of activity represented at the site is of 13th century AD occupation, and includes evidence of one or more structures and pitting. Artefactual evidence of this date suggests that low level industry such as iron-smithing, as well as fishing related activities and ship repair were occurring on or near to the site. Later, this period of activity was sealed beneath a thin layer of fine silty sand, which was itself sealed by a thick midden deposit. The sandy layer may well represent physical evidence of a storm episode, of which several are documented in the town at this time. This depositional process resulted in the formation of an interface providing a marked break in activity at the site after which the site was used extensively for the dumping of local refuse between 1300/1325 and 1350, which was evidence by a thick midden deposit. From c. 1350 onwards the site was little used other than for occasional pitting and dumping. By the 15th century archaeological activity had ceased corresponding with a decline in population on Romney Marsh, when the land was largely turned over to sheep pasture. Virgin beach sands were encountered at between 3.26m OD in the eastern corner of the site and 2.54m OD in the western corner of the site. |
