Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken on behalf of Shaylor Group at Wolverhampton Civic and Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton, West Midlands (NGR SO 91217 98754). The assessment was undertaken to better understand the range of designated and non-designated heritage assets on the proposed development site, and how they may be impacted upon by theproposed development. It specifically focuses on below ground archaeological potential, with no consideration given to the setting of the area. This is due to the nature of the proposed development having no impact upon the wider setting. The site is located on the western edge of the historic town centre. It is known to have been the site of a prebendary house belonging to the church since at least the later medieval period, and that prebendary house existed in some form up until the early 20th century. The first cartographic evidence is from the 1750 Isaac Taylor Map, and shows three buildings fronting on to Goat (later North) Street, with ornamental gardens laid out to the rear. Throughout the 19th century, the site was developed, with the gardens being reduced and built on, whilst old roads are realigned and new roads created. The three buildings on the east of the site appear to survive throughout this period, until construction of the Civic Hall in 1936-8 sees the demolition of the whole block. Whilst there haven't been any major archaeological works within the immediate vicinity, this assessment does demonstrate that some medieval remains have survived the post-medieval redevelopment of the town centre. The potential for medieval and post-medieval remains is moderate to high. The proposed development is intended to create a new cellar under the eastern side of the existing Civic Hall; as such the impact on the potential heritage assets would be high.
